ABOUT SAN DIEGO SEXUAL MEDICINE

The Sexual Medicine Pioneers

Since 2007, we have built the specialty center that sexual health patients travel across the country to reach.

The Sexual Medicine Pioneers

One of the Only Practices of Its Kind

Since 2007, sexual health has been the entire focus of our practice. Every member of our clinical team specializes in it. Every piece of our facility is built for it. Every hour of a patient evaluation is dedicated to it. We care for patients of every gender identity, across the full range of sexual health conditions in adults at every life stage, with the depth of attention sexual medicine actually requires.

Led by Dr. Goldstein

Dr. Goldstein has spent four decades shaping how sexual medicine is practiced. He has authored more than 360 peer-reviewed publications, edited multiple textbooks, and continues to see patients several days a week at SDSM. He treats erectile dysfunction, vestibulodynia, persistent genital arousal disorder, and the complex post-treatment cases other clinicians refer in. The 1998 NEJM trial that established oral therapy for erectile dysfunction is one paper among hundreds.

Treatment Built for the Diagnosis

Every treatment plan at SDSM is matched to the specific diagnosis, not pulled from a generic protocol. Our clinicians follow the evidence-based pathways that international consensus statements in sexual medicine recommend, many of which Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Kim helped author. What this means for you: the care you receive reflects what the field knows works for your specific condition, calibrated to your specific case

Every Dimension, Evaluated Together

Sexual conditions often involve more than one body system at once. Vulvar pain may stem from hormonal, neurological, or pelvic floor factors. Erectile dysfunction may stem from vascular, hormonal, or psychogenic factors. Our team evaluates these dimensions together in a single coordinated workup, so the diagnosis reflects all of them and the treatment plan integrates what each specialty contributes.

Patient Visits

For current patients who need to schedule an annual visit during this time of social distancing, we are conducting these visits remotely.

Shockwave Acoustic Therapy

FDA cleared shockwave acoustic pulse waves improve the blood flow to stimulate the self-healing mechanism of the affected tissue at the cell and vascular level.

Phone Consultations

Speak with one of our providers to learn more about your sexual health problem, and learn about testing and/or treatments that are appropriate for your condition.
The Facility and the Visit

Built for the Kind of Care We Practice

Our 6,000-square-foot facility on the UC San Diego Health East Campus was designed around how sexual medicine actually needs to work. Initial evaluations typically run two to four hours, because a thorough sexual health workup cannot be compressed into a fifteen-minute slot. Partners are welcome. Private exam rooms, a dedicated research suite, physical therapy space, and consultation areas exist under one roof so your care is coordinated rather than scattered. Many patients travel from across the country or internationally to be seen here, and we schedule accordingly, frequently arranging multi-day evaluations for patients who fly in.
The Philosophy of Care

How We Treat Patients

Sexual health is not separate from the rest of health, and our patients are not reducible to their symptoms. From the first phone call to the day you leave with a treatment plan, every member of our staff has been trained to approach sexual medicine with the clinical rigor it deserves and the discretion patients have not always received elsewhere. We care for patients of every gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationship structure, across the full range of sexual health conditions in adults.
Education, Research, and the Field

Advancing the Field, Not Just Treating Patients

San Diego Sexual Medicine is a teaching and research practice as well as a clinical one. We provide sexual medicine education to local medical schools, host monthly hospital-based sexual medicine rounds, and convene quarterly meetings for sex therapists and pelvic floor physical therapists. We offer one-on-one preceptorships for clinicians training in the field. Our clinical research facility runs studies that shape how sexual medicine is practiced beyond our clinic. Patient care and the advancement of the field are the same project. Every patient we see contributes to a growing body of clinical knowledge that makes better care possible for the patients who come after them.
Take charge of your sexual health.

Many of our patients arrive at our practice having been told for years that their condition is not real, not treatable, or not worth discussing. It is real. It is treatable. And at San Diego Sexual Medicine, this is what we specialize in. This is what we are known for. This is what we do
